Preamplifier

The Gamut D3 exemplifies GamuT's approach to preamplifier design, where the idea that "less is more" does not always apply. According to GamuT, the correct number of components is exactly that—no more, no less—to ensure optimal performance. The D3 employs low-noise power supply technology that reduces 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion to 0.0002%, delivering a dynamic range of 114dB. GamuT asserts that this sonic purity translates into an extraordinary listening experience.

A key priority for the D3 is managing the impedance of interconnects. With input and output impedance set at 1kΩ and 75Ω respectively, the D3 allows the musical signal to flow unimpeded, maintaining sound integrity and purity. GamuT claims that the D3’s output impedance outperforms the company’s previous passive preamplifiers.

The D3 features four pairs of RCA inputs and one pair of balanced XLR inputs, along with two pairs of XLR outputs for bi-amping. There are also one pair of RCA outputs and one pair of RCA Record outputs. Both the RCA and Record outputs are equipped with separate buffer amplifiers to maintain the Common Mode Rejection Ratio of the XLR outputs.

On the front panel, input selections for MM/MC, Tuner, Tape, HTH, CD, and BYPASS are displayed. The CD inputs are the only XLR inputs, while the HTH (Home Theater) input forwards the incoming signal directly to the outputs at full volume. The MM/MC RCA inputs lack an integrated phono stage and require a pre-preamplifier for proper support. Volume control is handled via an ALPS potentiometer, motor-driven when using the optional remote. Input selection is managed by NEC’s telecommunication-grade EA2 relays, ensuring precise and reliable operation.
