Digital-to-Analog Converter

In its commitment to developing a product for those seeking more than just high-quality audio reproduction, Rockna Audio identified several key aspects. First, the need for digital precision combined with an "analog" charm, free from any "digital glare" yet rich in detail. Second, the product had to offer exceptional value, future-proofing, new features, and a stunning, timeless design. This led to the creation of the "Wavelight DAC," more than just a younger sibling to the already renowned "Wavedream."

Software-Defined Architecture and FPGA Technology
The Wavelight DAC employs the latest Xilinx 7-series FPGA, enabling the assembly of functions of a custom high-performance R2R processor. Its digital processing capabilities are built with complex VHDL coding and state-of-the-art FPGA hardware. The architecture is essentially described by a piece of software.
Updating the Wavelight with new firmware effectively changes its hardware. This system offers great flexibility, obsolescence protection, and allows for improvements in the DAC's sound by modifying its internal architecture, adding new features, or enhancing existing ones. Each digital block is custom-built to Rockna Audio's high-performance standards.

Upsampling Filters
For the Wavelight, Rockna Audio extended its testing methodology and performed thorough calculations. Careful optimizations achieved subtle nuances in listening sessions, satisfying every listener.
Powerful, customized DSP units perform high-precision real-time calculations for studio-quality upsampling. Users can choose between four filter modes: linear, minimum phase, hybrid mode, and NOS.

Reclocking and D/A Conversion
A combination of memory buffers, a digital phase-locked loop (DPLL), and a custom input clock-decoupling scheme provides effective jitter cleaning before conversion. Using the advanced Femtovox2 technique, the final result is an "analog" sound without compromises.
A high-precision discrete R2R ladder performs the conversion from digital to analog, driven by FPGA algorithms. The Wavelight DAC can operate in pure R2R mode or in a hybrid mode.

Analog Section and Power Supply
With five digital inputs and one analog input, the unit can also function as a preamplifier. To avoid data truncation, the volume control within the Wavelight is fully analog, even if digitally controlled.
The analog path is fully discrete. Two toroidal transformers separate the analog and digital circuitry. A massive filtering bank capacity (over 100,000 uF) conditions the power supplies.

Quality
Each Wavelight is manually assembled in Rockna’s factory, individually tested, and undergoes a rigorous quality control process. Rockna Audio believes that sound should be complemented by detailed finish, robust construction, meticulous circuit design, and reliability.
For this reason, they use selected components such as high-precision resistors or audiophile-grade decoupling capacitors. The chassis is entirely built from solid aluminum with an anodized finish and a fine brushed texture.
