The Luxman CL-1000, heir to the legendary C-1000 preamplifier launched in 1975, represents the evolution of the brand’s tradition in tube amplification. Designed to complement the exceptional MQ-300 tube power amplifier, this preamplifier embodies Luxman’s unique expertise in tube-based music reproduction. In the 1960s, while the audio industry increasingly shifted towards transistors, Luxman recognized the unmistakable quality of tube sound and continued developing thermionic tube components without interruption.

The CL-1000 pays homage to tradition while integrating significant innovations to achieve superior sonic transparency. Among its key features is the sophisticated volume control system called LECUTA (Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Transformer Attenuator), ensuring precise power adjustment free from distortion. Additionally, output transformers with super-permalloy cores contribute to an expansive and three-dimensional soundstage. The external structure, crafted from natural walnut with a polished rosewood finish, adds a touch of refinement and elegance, emphasizing the perfect balance between advanced technology and musical expression.

The heart of any preamplifier is its volume control, a critical element that, if not properly implemented, can cause channel imbalances and introduce subtle yet real distortions, especially at low volumes. To prevent these issues, Luxman developed the LECUA system, which reaches its highest evolution in the CL-1000 with LECUTA. The front volume control is a 34-step rotary selector that activates an equal number of relays, positioned completely outside the signal path. These relays regulate the 34 attenuation steps through dedicated transformers for the left and right channels. To preserve signal integrity, the transformer cores are made of FINEMET®, a nanocrystalline material developed by Hitachi Metals, offering high magnetic flux density, exceptional permeability, and minimal core losses. The result is a rich, detailed, and impeccable sound, even at very low volumes.

The CL-1000’s aesthetics recall the classic design of the C-1000 but with a modern and precise execution: the front panel is constructed by layering three meticulously machined aluminum plates, creating a massive and resonance-resistant structure. This metal element harmonizes perfectly with the natural walnut cabinet, finished in polished rosewood, giving it a sophisticated presence.

Tube amplification is particularly sensitive to external vibrations, which is why Luxman designed an extremely rigid chassis, reinforced with internal partitions. Additionally, circuit board mounts are isolated from the main chassis using special rubber dampers, minimizing mechanical interference and ensuring a smooth and natural musical performance.

Every construction detail has been carefully studied to achieve exceptional performance. The RCA input and output terminals are crafted from an alloy that combines copper’s conductivity with brass’s strength, while the chassis rests on iron isolator feet featuring a density-gradient structure, designed to dissipate vibrations from the supporting surface.

From a circuit perspective, the CL-1000 employs a two-stage P-K NF amplification. The balanced inputs feature transformers with super-permalloy cores, while the attenuator driver utilizes a JJ Electronic E88CC dual-triode tube to achieve 6 dB gain. This tube was selected for its outstanding reliability, low noise, lively dynamics, and expressive midrange performance. After volume adjustment via LECUTA, the output stage uses a second E88CC and independent output transformers for the left and right channels, also featuring super-permalloy cores.

Stage coupling is entrusted to Luxman-developed oil capacitors, significantly enhancing audio reproduction quality. Furthermore, to ensure the purest signal path, the Line Straight mode allows complete bypassing of tone controls, delivering an energetic and uncompromising musical experience.

The CL-1000 integrates a high-quality phono preamplifier capable of handling both MM and MC cartridges. Six selectors on the rear panel optimize impedance and load capacitance, ensuring maximum compatibility with different cartridge types.

Transformers play a fundamental role in tube sound quality, which is why the CL-1000 uses independent output transformers for each channel, built with high-permeability super-permalloy cores. The same type of transformer is employed for balanced inputs, guaranteeing an extraordinary level of musicality.

To effectively handle power demands during peak dynamics, the CL-1000’s power supply is designed for absolute stability. A large toroidal transformer, paired with independent filter capacitors for the left and right channels, ensures immediate response, excellent channel separation, and superior reliability.

Luxman has also implemented an automatic demagnetization system that activates every time the preamplifier is powered on, eliminating residual magnetic fields in the transformer cores and preserving sound purity. For even more precise calibration, the Articulator function allows manual transformer demagnetization.

Finally, to ensure a harmonious and immersive sound experience, the CL-1000 utilizes Luxman’s exclusive oil capacitors, originally developed for the MQ-300 tube amplifier. These components, along with low-profile, high-current electrolytic capacitors, contribute to an extraordinarily natural and engaging musical reproduction.
