Power amplifier

The Bose 1800 is a high-power, dual-channel slave amplifier capable of delivering 400 watts RMS per channel into four ohms or 250 watts per channel into eight ohms. The basic unit is designed for 19-inch rack mounting. Like most slave amplifiers, the available controls are limited to a gain control for each channel and an on/off switch. There is a pilot light and a high-temperature indicator that illuminates if the amplifier overheats and the thermal protection device is triggered.

An innovative feature is the output peak level indicator, consisting of a series of light-emitting diodes for each channel. These progressively light up as the power increases, starting from off at low power levels to fully illuminated at full power. Two lights at the top of each column indicate when the amplifier is being overdriven. Input jack sockets and output terminals, also compatible with 4mm plugs, are located on the rear panel.

The construction of the Bose 1800 is extremely robust, with a total weight of approximately 36 kg (80 lbs). The side panels and much of the rear panel feature finned heat sinks for efficient heat dissipation. A large power transformer and two massive electrolytic capacitors occupy the center of the chassis, with printed circuit boards positioned on either side of the capacitors. Each amplifier board's design is complex, with all components, including the output transistors, mounted on the board. An intermediate heat sink transfers heat from the output transistors to the main heat sink, and all electrical connections are made via plug connectors. This design allows for the removal and replacement of an entire amplifier in less than five minutes.
