Released in 1965, I Put a Spell on You contains some of Nina Simone's best-loved and most successful songs. "I Put a Spell on You," the album's title track, was written and first performed by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. In the original version, this song had a vaguely ironic note, but Nina Simone transformed it into a passionate love anthem, on a magical background of strings and brass, to the point of becoming one of her most emblematic songs. In 1992 Nina Simone chose this song to give the title to her autobiography, I Put a Spell on You.
