Deutsche Grammophon proudly announces the launch of The Original Source, a new series featuring some of the most famous titles from the legendary Yellow Label reissued on 180 gram vinyl. Engineers at the famed Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin have remastered these 1970s four-track tapes, using their own cutting needles and strictly analog techniques, to create records with the highest possible sound quality. Pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl at Optimal, these records are housed in luxurious gatefold sleeves containing previously unseen text and photographs, and all the technical data relating to the original recording.

The first edition of The Original Source includes 14 albums to be released in 2023, starting with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony performed by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Carlos Kleiber, Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan (2 LPs), Franz Schubert’s Trout Quintet with the Amadeus Quartet, reinforced for the occasion by pianist Emil Gilels and double bass player Rainer Zepperitz, and Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado.

In 1976 Claudio Abbado and the London Symphony Orchestra made a splendid recording of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, which was reviewed enthusiastically by the specialized press around the world. In particular, Abbado’s reading does full justice to the rhythmic complexity of this extremely difficult work and highlights the many details of Stravinsky’s score. Almost half a century after its recording, this edition of The Rite of Spring continues to be one of the best available on the recording market.
