Jethro Tull's second album, Stand Up marked one of the first turning points for the English progressive band, which had added guitarist Martin Barre to its ranks and inserted the folk-rock influences of Ian Anderson into the blues base of his style.
Released in the summer of 1969, Stand Up quickly reached the top of the British album charts, achieving a prestigious Gold Disc in the United States.
Stand Up is Anderson's first album on which he has handled both music and lyrics, resulting in a very different group of songs, ranging from the swirling blues of "A New Day Yesterday" to the rave-up backed by the mandolin of "Fat Man" and the witty reworking of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Bourrée in E Minor". In a recent interview, Anderson stated that Stand Up was his favorite Jethro Tull record, «because it was the first album with original music that I feel is truly mine. For this reason, Stand Up will always have a very special place in my heart."
