The price change with the finish
An angled baffle ensures perfect time alignment between the drivers with a focus on correct phase behavior.
The cabinet is optimized for a minimal baffle surface, suppressing baffle effects through its truncated pyramid-shaped top and eliminating standing waves within the structure. The result is a three-dimensional stereo image with realistic depth and spatial cues of the recording environment, even in a larger cabinet design.
The Reference 9 features 40 mm thick walls and a robustly reinforced cabinet, built entirely using Qln's proprietary Qboard® technology, effectively eliminating structural resonances in the acoustic chamber. The low-frequency reflex port, with its trumpet-shaped openings at both ends, further reduces air turbulence. The cabinet is supported by two sturdy solid legs with adjustable feet, compatible with wood/stone floors or soft carpeted surfaces.
The cone area, weight, and motor system (magnet) are the most critical factors influencing how a speaker reproduces low frequencies. To achieve dynamic and airy bass performance, a 9-inch driver with a lightweight thin-carbon sandwich cone design was chosen.
This new custom-designed 9-inch woofer is a state-of-the-art driver with a low-compression, high-precision basket that enables high-velocity airflow without reflections or compression. The cone is crafted from an ultra-rigid, treated carbon sandwich, which is stronger and stiffer than aluminum or other common cone materials. This woofer offers a unique balance of rigidity and low resonance at higher frequencies due to the special thin-carbon sandwich design. It delivers fast, well-defined bass across the frequency range with minimal distortion.
The tweeter selected for the Reference 9 builds on the development work from the Signature, incorporating further improvements to the acoustic chamber, optimizing it for the crossover design.
The new 25 mm tweeter with a wide surround provides extraordinary vocal reproduction and excellent imaging quality from all listening positions. Its large rolled surround and fabric dome diaphragm ensure a flat frequency response beyond 30 kHz, with exceptional off-axis dispersion. The unique airflow magnet system and rear chamber eliminate any compression, reflection, or resonance.
For the Reference 9, a completely new midrange driver was developed based on the expertise gained from the Kevlar mid-woofer used in the Signature. We continue to utilize our special Qln-treated Kevlar material but with a new voice coil and magnet system, improving sensitivity and dynamics for this dedicated midrange application.
A 7-inch midrange driver was chosen as the optimal size to seamlessly bridge the tweeter and woofer.
The size of the woofer and tweeter affects the size and role of the midrange driver. It must blend perfectly with both. A smaller driver would lack body in the lower midrange, while a larger driver would lose dynamics and resolution at higher frequencies. Our custom-designed 7-inch Kevlar midrange driver achieves both low-frequency capability and high-frequency resolution, thanks to its controlled curved cone that reduces moving mass.
The crossover is rigidly wired with non-inductive capacitors bypassed with large copper film capacitors for the tweeter. A 6 dB first-order crossover is used between the dedicated midrange and the tweeter. For the midrange and tweeter, only flat-wire air-core inductors are used. All components are secured with soft glue for damping, and the remaining coils are baked to prevent internal resonances within components and the filter.
Precision metal-film resistors with high power-handling capacity, low noise, and stable temperature performance are used for the tweeter, while 20W resistors are used for the woofer. These elements ensure nearly perfect timing within the crossover and low-noise characteristics across the entire frequency range.
