The latter features the award-winning ESS Sabre 9038 chip, while a high-voltage analog buffer with low output impedance feeds a pair of excellent gold-plated output pins and is powered by low-noise dual 18V devices.

The Primo’s audio optimizations go beyond this, with the clock being generated not only more precisely but also enhanced by software patches developed with Asus to minimize jitter as much as possible. The Tinker board has separate USB and Ethernet buses, creating proprietary signal paths to limit interference. Another exclusive feature is the I2S connection to the DAC, made without cables directly from the connection comb, ensuring a disturbance-free transfer and a clock frequency separated from the data flow, further reducing jitter. Another nice touch is the high-quality switching power supply included, designed for medical use with excellent noise rejection.

Connectivity is quite extensive, with Bluetooth, 1 SPIDF out, and 4 USB ports that can serve both input and output functions—for example, a USB CD player (Primo has playback/ripping capabilities), any AD converter with USB output, or an HDD with music, just to name a few. Volumio will display the connected digital sources in the OSD menu for easy listening. The HDMI output makes Primo unique in its class, as you can connect any TV to view the OSD menu and interact with it via mouse (connected to a USB) or directly with a touch monitor.

Volumio control is one of its highlights, with no app required—just a browser and an IP address, and you're all set. The graphics load according to the device’s resolution, offering a straightforward user experience, simple enough for anyone to use.
