The Naim CDS (Compact Disc System) is a CD player that stands out for its unique approach to sound reproduction, challenging the conventional wisdom of digital players. The design features a separate power supply, with one section for the transport and another for the digital-to-analog converter (DAC). While using standard electronic components, such as the Philips SAA7220 chip and the TDA1541 S1 "Crown" DAC, the player focuses on improving the mechanical aspects and eliminating vibrations.

The power supply is very robust, with a 300VA toroidal transformer that separately powers the analog and digital circuits. The transport mechanism uses a top-loading system with a plexiglass cover, and the disc is secured with a small magnetic clamp, minimizing vibrations. The circuit board is mounted on a suspended plate to isolate acoustic vibrations.

In terms of sound performance, the Naim CDS offers a very natural, fluid sound with no excessive coloration. The high frequencies are particularly smooth and detailed, while the midrange frequencies are well-balanced.
