CONRAD JOHNSON PV15

The Conrad-Johnson PV15 preamplifier represents the latest evolution of the company’s PV (preamp/valve) series, offering an elegant design with the signature champagne-gold finish.

The PV15 uses two types of 8080 miniature triode vacuum tubes, chosen for their durability, ease of replacement, and sound quality. Conrad-Johnson claims that with normal use, the tubes provide a good two or three years of listening before needing replacement. It is recommended not to leave the preamplifier on continuously to avoid shortening the tube life. Additionally, a warm-up time of about 15 minutes is necessary to stabilize the tubes before optimal listening.

One of the distinctive features compared to previous models is the absence of traditional knobs, replaced by round buttons and a microprocessor to control functions such as input selection, balance, mute, and volume, all accessible via the front panel or the included remote. Although the remote looks somewhat mismatched with the preamplifier’s aesthetic, it works well and even allows you to turn the device on and off by holding the Mute button, as there is no dedicated power switch.

The preamplifier offers five single-ended inputs, in addition to the EPL and Theater inputs. If requested, an optional phono module can be integrated, ideal for both high-output moving magnet and low-output moving coil cartridges. One of the most appreciated features of the PV15 is its ability to pass the signal to the EPL output even when the preamp is turned off, preventing unnecessary wear on the tubes.

The sound of the PV15 is precise, methodical, and well-defined, ensuring that sound images stay focused and do not wander or become imprecise. While it retains some typical Conrad-Johnson characteristics, such as a slight warmth in the midrange, the PV15 stands out for its more neutral sound, without the abundant “golden glow” present in other models by the brand. Its handling of extreme frequencies, although not reaching the absolute depth in the bass or extension in the treble, is balanced and distortion-free, delivering a satisfying performance in both high and low frequencies.

The preamplifier also boasts notable resolution, able to clearly separate individual instruments in complex mixes, such as in heavy metal recordings, or when listening to classical tracks.
