The Trichord Dino is a mid-range phono preamplifier designed to offer excellent performance at an affordable price. Created by the electronics division of Michell Engineering, the Dino stands out for its quality construction and advanced technological features, without being as expensive as other more exclusive models.

The Dino uses a two-box design, with a separate power supply featuring a small toroidal transformer housed in a plastic box. The power supply efficiently provides raw AC, which is then regulated within the preamplifier itself. The main unit of the Dino is enclosed in a sleek silvered perspex box, featuring a modern blue LED light. The power, signal input, and ground connections are located on the rear.

An interesting feature of the Dino is its two sets of DIP switches, which allow you to customize the input resistance, capacitance, and gain, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of cartridges. Additionally, the power supply can be upgraded with a more powerful model to accommodate future needs.

The Dino’s circuitry is largely simplified compared to more complex models, but still retains high-quality components. The first stage uses an SSM2017 microphone preamp with variable gain and adjustable input impedance, while the second stage is a FET-opamp combined with a discrete class A transistor. The capacitors in the RIAA filter are MCap polypropylene and tin-foil types, chosen for their excellent performance. The external power supply features a 40VA toroidal transformer and low-noise voltage regulators built with discrete components.

The Trichord Dino is an extremely versatile, well-built phono preamp that can handle a wide range of cartridges thanks to its flexibility and high-quality components.
