The Trichord Dino is a phono preamplifier designed for the mid-range market but with considerable ambitions. While its build is simpler compared to high-end models, it offers excellent flexibility and noteworthy performance, making it a great choice for those seeking a reliable yet affordable device.

The Dino features a separate power supply, with a small toroidal transformer housed in a plastic enclosure that provides low alternating voltage. The voltage is regulated inside the main unit, which has a simple and functional design. The body of the preamp is made of silvered perspex, with a blue LED adding a touch of elegance. The connectors, power socket, and ground terminal are located on the rear panel, keeping the front panel clean and minimalist.

The strength of the Dino lies in its ability to adapt to a wide range of cartridges, thanks to two sets of DIP switches that allow adjustment of input resistance, capacitance, and gain. This makes the preamp easily upgradable, capable of handling both MM and MC cartridges with ease.

The Dino is essentially a simplified version of the Delphini, with two separate stages and a passive RIAA filter between the blocks. The first stage uses an SSM2017 with variable input impedance and gain, while the second stage is a FET op-amp combined with a discrete Class A output stage. The capacitors in the RIAA filter are high-quality MCap polypropylene. The power system includes a 40 VA external transformer and low-noise discrete regulators designed to ensure stability and minimize noise.

The Dino offers an open, clear, and detailed sound, particularly appreciated when paired with mid-range cartridges. Its frequency response is well-balanced, with controlled and rhythmic bass, and high definition in the mid-high frequencies.
