The most unusual feature of the PHA-200 is its amplification method. Traditional phono stages or step-up transformers are designed to accurately amplify the very low output voltage of moving coil cartridges. In contrast, the PHA-200 extracts the maximum current signal from the cartridge, which is then converted into a sufficiently high voltage to drive a conventional line-level preamplifier.

In the PHA-200, the cartridge coil is short-circuited or terminated at zero ohms, consequently, the current from the coil is much higher than with conventional voltage amplification.

All cartridges have magnetic distortions caused by the nonlinear characteristics of the magnetic materials in the cartridge components. These distortions have a negative effect on sound quality.

By using current amplification and extracting the current signal, the magnetic distortions of the cartridge are significantly reduced. In other words, the linearity across the reproducible frequency range of the cartridge is improved. As a result, the PHA-200 is able to amplify the original cutting signal on records as precisely as possible.

The sonic advantages of the PHA-200 compared to traditional phono stages or step-up transformers are immediately evident. The neutral soundstage, rich mid-bass, and smooth highs are particularly impressive. The overall sound quality offers enhanced transparency and resolution.
