The LS5/9 is a high-quality loudspeaker designed by "BBC Research and Development" and featuring an entirely in-house-developed 8-inch woofer, built using the finest materials available at the time. Designed for BBC use in studios and control rooms, the LS5/9 maintains a perfect affinity with its larger counterpart, the LS5/8. Equally at home in a domestic environment, its rich and balanced midrange reveals details never heard before, even from the most familiar recordings.

Thanks to the expert work of designer Derek Hughes, the original BBC design has been recreated with new levels of excellence. A new bass/midrange driver has been developed in collaboration with Volt Loudspeakers. It features a cast aluminum frame and a substantial motor assembly. A polypropylene cone (ultra-selected for quality), paired with a high-quality rubber surround, completes the woofer’s construction. Each bass/midrange driver is hand-assembled and tested by Volt.

The tweeter is a selected version of the 34mm Audax soft dome, protected by a robust metal grille. A sophisticated crossover integrates the two units and equalizes the overall response for optimal performance.

The cabinet utilizes the classic BBC "thin-wall" construction and is manufactured in the UK using high-quality 9mm birch plywood. Handcrafted veneers are applied and finished to exceptionally high standards. The panels are mounted to ensure resonances are shifted away from the critical midrange region, and a layer of rock wool provides the necessary internal damping. The grille, made from a single piece of 9mm birch plywood, is held in place by magnets hidden behind the front panel.
